Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon

Getting the race back on track with COVID-19 testing

The Standard Chartered Marathon is one of Hong Kong's most iconic sporting events. After a brief hiatus in 2020, the revival of the race marks the first major athletic gathering since the start of the pandemic. To help facilitate its return, Prenetics was appointed as the race’s official COVID-19 testing partner and supported the safety of all participants of the event.

The Process

Project Screen by Prenetics had the task of performing COVID-19 tests for all of the 16,000+ marathon participants - including enrolled runners, officials and volunteers. In a span of 72 hours, each of the participant's combined nasal and throat swab sample was collected on site at the Prenetics' collection booth, processed through RT-PCR testing and notified of their negative result to ensrure a safe and successful race day.

The Process

Reservation system was made available for runners to schedule their tests at Prenetics' temporary booths spanning two football pitches in Victoria Park where trained healthcare professionals performed sample collection for them, as well as for officials and volunteers.

Key Innovations

Dedicated wristbands were given to enrolled runners who had been tested. Each participant needs to wear these wristbands on the day of the race as proof of valid attendance.

Results

Thousands of athletes dashed through the streets on October 24, 2021 as Hong Kong's iconic marathon officially kicked off. Over 16,371 participant's samples were tests and processed within 72 hours, with 0 positive cases found.

"We are humbled to support the revival of this major large-scale event, a real beacon of optimism for the community of Hong Kong. We believe health is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. Prenetics is helping on the front line to safeguard the health and safety of the public, as we continue to disrupt and decentralise healthcare by bringing it closer to our community”

Mr. Danny Yeung, CEO and Co-Founder, Prenetics
